An essential step to realizing safe, adequate housing for young people is to ensure affordability. To achieve this goal and allow young people to meet basic life necessities, their economic security and financial well-being are important and should be prioritized by lawmakers. And there are different innovative solutions that could provide young people rent relief from economic hardship. This webinar will provide a general overview of what cash transfers are, how they work, their impact and how effective they are, and the tools and actions needed to expand and advance cash transfer programs on the local, state, and national levels. Advocates will learn what Congress and some states and communities are doing to make cash transfers a reality, challenges advocates face in this effort, and important considerations for young people when participating in cash transfer programs (including the tax consequences of cash transfers and impact on existing public benefits). Most importantly, speakers will discuss how they engage people with lived experience in advancing cash assistance programs across the country.
