During the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers enhanced loss mitigation waterfalls to prevent the largest foreclosure crisis since the Great Recession. Many of these policies have become a permanent part of the loss mitigation toolkit. Research shows that these policies substantially lower default risk, particularly for borrowers of color. Join the Urban Institute’s Housing Finance Policy Center for an event during National Homeownership Month, where we will present and discuss research and analysis on the effectiveness of loss mitigation strategies throughout the pandemic and the implications for access to credit. A panel of experts will then join a moderated evidence-based discussion to help explore lessons and potential enhancements to improve loss mitigation policies in the future.
