For his many years of fighting for racial and social justice, voting rights, and affordable housing and for his exceptional leadership in Congress to address to the housing and homelessness crisis during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, NLIHC is honored to bestow the 2021 Edward Brooke Housing Leadership Award to Senator Sherrod Brown.
Representative Maxine Waters
For her indispensable leadership fighting for equity and justice, combatting racism, championing the housing needs of the lowest-income people, and achieving critical housing and homelessness resources and protections during the pandemic, NLIHC is honored to bestow the 2021 Edward Brooke Housing Leadership Award to Congresswoman Maxine Waters.
Joy Johnson
The Dolbeare Lifetime Service Award, named for NLIHC’s founder Cushing Niles Dolbeare, will be bestowed to Joy Johnson, former NLIHC board member and founder of Charlottesville’s Public Housing Association of Residents, for her decades of advocacy and organizing with public housing residents and other low-income people, as well as for fostering the next generation of leaders.
Housing Justice Network
The Sheila Crowley Housing Justice Award, named after former NLIHC President and CEO Sheila Crowley, will be bestowed to the National Housing Law Project’s Housing Justice Network, for the network’s tireless efforts to defend low-income tenants from wrongful evictions during COVID-19 and to litigate on forefront issues related to the federally-assisted housing, evictions, foreclosures, fair housing, and disaster response.
